Kaspersky Antivirus 2010 Review

Buy Kaspersky Anti-Virus

Kaspersky Anti-Virus does a better-than-average job of keeping your PC safe, but it lacks the robust feature set of its more-expensive sibling. Several new features have made it into this version along with expected upgrades to the anti-virus engine, but one of the best–the Safe Run program sandbox–is sorely missed.

Like so many of the other antivirus packages including  BitDefender Antivirus, Kaspersky also offers a 3-user license option (for 1 year), so it’s actually a very cost-effective way to protect all of your home computers.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Standout Features:

  • Antivirus for IM
  • Gamer Mode
  • iSwift technology adjusts scanning to compensate for system load
  • URL Advisor for proactive browser security

New features in the 2010 edition include a behavioral-based detection system called the Urgent Detection Sytsem. The UDS uses the anonymous data Kaspersky customers who choose to participate in submitting their system scans for analysis. In fact, the UDS must be opted-out of–there’s a check box and data collection statement to read when you install the program. A gamer mode, somewhat superfluous virtual keyboard to avoid keylogging, and auto-run disabling are the less-impressive new features, joining stalwarts like antivirus protection for files, e-mail, HTTP traffic, and instant messaging. There are protections against phishing, too, as well as the Kaspersky URL advisor.

If you’re looking for antivirus protection for small business, you might be interested in Kaspersky Anti-Virus for File Server or Kaspersky Business Space Security, one of the best small business antivirus software suites available.

Scope of Protection:(4 of 5)
Kaspersky Anti-Virus protects your computer from all angles, guarding against viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, and rootkits. The impressive arsenal also keeps your computer safe from exploits (OS and browser), keyloggers, dialers, adware, malicious scripts, and more. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 offers full web protection; the Kaspersky URL Advisor gives you a whole new level of protection online. The plug-in works with your browser (Firefox and/or IE) and provides integrated warnings and advanced protection while you surf.

Of course the upgraded Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 covers more ground, but for desktop antivirus software, Kaspersky Anti-Virus is as all-encompassing as they come.

Effectiveness: (4 of 5)
Kaspersky has historically been one of the most effective antivirus software around, often among the first to detect (and protect from) new viruses in the wild. The software continues to take advantage of the large user-base with their Kaspersky Security Network. This community approach basically lets each user (who opts in) to act as a lookout for the others. If Kaspersky gathers (anonymous) information from your computer about a new virus, they can find the cure and deliver it to everyone quickly.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus doesn’t just find and remove malware, but also keeps an eye on potential security threats. The integrated vulnerability scan checks for system and application issues that should be addressed to reduce/eliminate vulnerabilities.

Ease of Installation: (4 of 5)
Kaspersky is super easy to install by following the traditional setup wizard to perform a suggested or custom install. The software is available as a box copy (you can also purchase the BackUp CD), or you can download and install the software immediately. Kaspersky protects your computer from the get-go, from a number of threats with antivirus for your files, system, web and even IM. Kaspersky blocks viruses and spyware in real-time, and includes advanced white-listing and other application controls for any application you open.

In fact, Kaspersky also has a Gamer mode that can be deployed for uninterrupted play. Now when you’re in the middle of a full-screen frag-fest (or raid as may be the case) you won’t be frustratingly interrupted with random popups or security alerts.

Features:(4 of 5)
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 has a full lineup of features, with all the essentials and then some. One unique feature is the virtual keyboard. While the efficacy is debated, the virtual keyboard lets you input text (passwords, social security numbers, bank information) by simply clicking on the “keyboard” with your mouse. While it’s no way to type an essay, the Kaspersky virtual keyboard does avoid key loggers and those trying to steal your info with keystroke recognition malware.

Advanced users will love the complete control over the antivirus software that they have. Kaspersky is a software-tweakers dream, with customizable controls for every component. And while experts can tweak a number of things, the slider controls and toggle buttons should be easy enough for anyone to use if they want to. With the various settings you can customize what Kaspersky scans, how deep it scans, and other tweaks for each individual scan and tool.

The scan scheduler is located in the setting, and lets users decide exactly when and how often the various scans are performed. By default Kaspersky Anti-Virus is scheduled to perform scans (and updates) automatically. Two innovative technologies help keep the scans running quickly. iChecker scanning means that only files that have changed since your last scan will be scanned, improving scan speed without affecting efficacy. iSwift technology automatically throttles the resource demand and adjusts scanning as needed, so if you’re not running any programs and the system is idle, Kaspersky works faster.

One new feature that will help ramp up security for everyday web browsing is the Kaspersky URL Advisor. This plug-in runs on your web browser (Internet Explorer and/or Firefox) and will help you stay away from malicious websites. If you accidentally stumble on a bad link, Kaspersky alerts you and blocks access. And the plug-in doesn’t install a new toolbar, so you probably won’t notice much change to your routine online browsing.

Updates:(4 of 5) Frequent updates are essential for effective antivirus and antispyware protection. Kaspersky Anti-Virus delivers updates on a regular basis, every hour, for continual security and to make sure that updates aren’t so big that they take forever to load. Updates are performed automatically, though you can also initiate a manual update at any time, from the software directly or from the Kaspersky notification icon in the system tray (lower right).

Another nice feature for those interested is the Virus Activity Review. This is a streamlined virus watch report (online, flash) that displays a number of interesting statistics and analysis on the current layout of viruses and other malware. With graphs and charts, it’s easy to get a glimpse into the world virus threat level and see how Kaspersky is staying up to date.

Several of the antivirus software we reviewed includes the capability to revert or “rollback” to a previously working database if the most recent update caused any problems. Kaspersky has this feature, and it’s easy to find and deploy. Simply go the ‘Update Center’ tab on the dashboard and find the tool.

And if your computer completely crashes, you’ll be glad you created a rescue boot disk (from the Security+ tab). The rescue disk can easily be burned, and will contain a disk image (ISO file) that can run on bootup (before the operating system) and help you revive a dead PC.

Help & Support:(4 of 5)
Kaspersky offers some great support for all of their products, including Anti-Virus. Technical support comes in the form of an online knowledge base (searchable), FAQs, product manuals and an active forum. Not only are these available from the Kaspersky website, but can be easily accessed from within the program itself.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus also includes context-sensitive help. So not only are the included help files complete, but they open to information that corresponds with where you are in the software. You can also submit a specific issue online, or connect with an operator through online live chat.

Summary:
Overall, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 continues to deliver superb protection and security. The antivirus software is robust, and integrates innovative technologies to defend from newer threats. As one of the best antivirus software we’ve reviewed, Kaspersky Anti-Virus is a great way to go for PC peace of mind.

Review of Trend AntiVirus 2010

Trend Micro

Today We want to offer to you review of Trend Micro AntiVirus 2010 is the essential security you need so you can email and share files with confidence. About a few years ago, the 2005 version was in the top antivirus programs with many awards (from CNET and other websites). But now, about 4 years later Protect your home computers and networks, mobile devices and personal information with Trend Micro. TrendMicro doesn’t appear to be at the top. Why did it happen ? See our review below…

Installation :(4.5 of 5):

Trend Micro AntiVirus 2010 installed in about 2.5 minutes and the computer was immediately ready to protect you from viruses (no reboots. Sometimes it’s so important ;-) . The installation process was smooth and easy, however it would have been nice to see some customization of options built into the install process since users rarely alter options after installation. Overall, a good installation process.

Features & Ease of Use: (4.5 of 5)

We can’t find any glaring flaws in user interface, but we think it’s very simple and easy to use and gives to user an excellent set of options for control over the program. Trend Micro Antivirus also protects against Spyware and Rootkits, as well as having Email scanning and Proactive intrusion blocking capabilities.

PERFORMANCE

 a)Virus Scanner (2.5 of 5)

In Trend Micro we can find three types of scanning: Quick Scan, Full System Scan, and Custom Scan.

Full System Scan :If you want to scan all your files on all drivers you have to know – that type of scan takes a long time. For example, computer with 70 GB of used space on its hard-drive took just under 65 minutes.

The Quick Scan of our test computer took just under 3.5 minutes – giving users a nice quick check of their system’s security.

In Custom scan you can select what you want to scan.

Updates:

Our testing showed that Trend Micro updated its virus definition database on average only 2.2 times per day – much less than Norton Antivirus, which updates its software on average 242 times per day. Of course it’s seldom, but we do not know how many information Trend Micro adding when they update it’s virus databases.

b)System Resource Usage

Unfortunatelly, Trend Micro AntiVirus was the worst program in our System Resource Usage Testing this year. View the results of the Antivirus tests we performed below…

Memory Use: Trend Micro AntiVirus uses 17.9 MB of memory. 5th-place rating of the 10 Antivirus programs tested.

Reboot Time: Trend Micro added 10.1 seconds to our test computer’s reboot time. 3rd-place rating of the 10 Antivirus programs tested.

Installation Size: Trend Micro takes 435 MB hard-drive space for installation. Worst rated (#10) of the 10 Antivirus programs tested.

Application Launch Time:TrendMicro AntiVirus 2010 added 0.407s on average to launch a web browser. Again, Trend is the Worst rated (#10) of the 10 Antivirus programs tested.

File Conversion Time: : Trend Micro added 1.97s on average to convert a MP3 file to four other file types. Yet again, Worst rated (#10) of the 10 Antivirus programs tested.

c) Effectiveness: (2 of 5)

• AV Comparatives is an independent Antivirus testing lab in Austria providing some of the most trusted Virus detection tests in the industry. However, AV Comparatives hasn’t tested Trend Micro Antivirus since 2005 when it was one of the worst products and dropped from further testing. No rating by AV Comparatives due to poor previous results should be a red-flag for those considering this Antivirus program.
We hope that in future AV Comparatives will change this decision, because Trend Micro it’s also famous antivirus but it has bad period for now.

• ICSA Labs Certified (although it hasn’t been included in testing since March/09). ICSA is an independent organization that sets standards for security products and certifies anti-virus software.

• Virus Bulletin’s certification is given to antivirus software that detects all viruses “in the wild.” Trend FAILED the last 3 tests it was part of (in 2007 and 2008), and has since been dropped from further testing.

• West Coast Labs Checkmark Anti-Virus Desktop Certification. WCL specializes in functionality testing, performance validation and Checkmark Certification of security products.

Help & Support (4 of 5)

Trend Micro’s support is very thorough. They have an extensive online Knowledge Base, Free Email Support, Free Chat, and Free Phone Support – which not many Antivirus vendors offer anymore.

We tested Trend’s email support and received an answer 80 minutes later. The email reply was prompt and answered our question very well.

CONCLUSION:

From a quick glance, Trend Micro appears to be a good Antivirus program, but when you look at the program’s all-important Performance its failures become very apparent. Its System Resource Usage was the worst we tested this year, and it failed several important Antivirus Certification tests – making one question its Effectiveness as an Antivirus program. An Antivirus program that appears quite good, yet fails in terms of Performance and Effectiveness should be a red-flag to avoid it and to instead try another Antivirus program .

However, we think that we can’t throw Trend Micro Antivirus to trash. It’s still good antivirus with good support (it’s so important) and other pleasant features.

Norton AntiVirus 2010 Review

November 21, 2009 Leave a comment
Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 2010

Review of Norton AntiVirus 2010:

Norton AntiVirus is the world’s best-selling security program. However, its performance has been scrutinized over the years – especially from those in the tech community. Symantec began to address these performance concerns with their 2009 version last year – let’s see if this trend continues with Norton AntiVirus 2010…
1) Installation: (4.5 of 5)

Norton AntiVirus 2010 quickly installs in only 54 seconds and requires no system reboots. With its Download Manager and Installation Wizard, Norton is now one of the easiest Anti Virus programs to install. Long gone are the days when Norton used to take 20+ minutes to install and required multiple reboots to install (4-5 years ago).

2) Features & Ease of Use: (4.5)

Norton 2010′s user-interface has a similar look & feel to last year’s version. However, it builds upon previous versions with several new features such as Norton Download Insight and Norton File Insight which warn of dangerous downloads and files which may be threats.
Norton System Insight offers details of your computer’s resource usage so its performance can be improved. While Norton’s scheduler automatically delays updates, scans and other tasks until your computer is idle – this idle time usage should make Norton Antivirus 2010 even
less noticeable to users than it was before.

Also new this year, laptop battery life is conserved by delaying many tasks until the laptop
is once again plugged in. On top of this are the many graphs and reports that Norton 2010 has added this year – allowing it to better inform its users of their computer’s performance than previous
versions did. In many ways Norton has moved closer to the feel of Kaspersky Antivirus with its abundance of charts and graphs that clearly show users
their computer’s performance in an easily understood visual format. Overall, a great improvement to Norton’s feature-set this year.

New Features:

new! Norton Download Insight, File Insight, Threat Insight, System Insight,
and Norton Insight Network

new! SONAR™ 2 Behavioral Protection

Features Checklist:

Anti-Spyware

Anti-Rootkit

Bot Protection

Email Scanning

IM Protection

Trojan Protection

Worm Protection

Anti-Phishing (available with
Internet Security)

3) PERFORMANCE

3a) Virus Scanner: (4.5 of 5)

Norton has 3 scanning options: Quick Scan, Full System Scan, and Custom Scan. On our test computer with 70GB of used space on its hard-drive it took Norton 2010 just
27 seconds to perform its Quick Scan, while the Full System Scan took 42 minutes making it one of the fastest virus scanners on the market.

New scanning technologies this year include Norton Insight Network (based on Quorum technology) and SONAR 2 (Symantec Online Network for
Advanced Response
). These features are designed to detect whether a file is trustworthy or not based on behavioral and cloud-based data. This should result in
Norton being better able to identify files as being trustworthy or untrustworthy that would have previously fallen into the grey/unknown category. Only time will
tell how these new features perform.

Updates:

New last year (Norton 2009) was Norton’s new Pulse Update feature that automatically downloads new Virus Definitions
every 6 minutes on average (over 200 updates per day). This new feature gives you the most up-to-date protection of any antivirus program available – over
10 times more updates than its nearest competitor.

3b) Performance Testing: (4.5 of 5)

Last year marked the beginning of a new era for Norton, as they finally began to take the performance of their Antivirus software seriously. View the results below of the Antivirus tests we performed this year to see how well the 2010 version of Norton fared against its competition…

3c) Effectiveness: (4 of 5)

AV Comparatives has 2 major Virus/Malware tests each year. In the most recent test in August, the On Demand Detection Test, Norton was rated 3 out of 3 Stars. In the 2nd test, the Proactive Test, Norton didn’t perform as well – receiving a 2-Star rating.

(*AV Comparatives is an independent Antivirus testing lab in Austria
providing some of the most trusted Virus detection tests in the industry.)

ICSA Labs Certified. ICSA is an independent organization that sets standards for security products and certifies anti-virus software.
Virus Bulletin’s VB 100% Certified. Norton passed the most recent VB100 test (Oct./09), however they did fail the previous test. Of the last 46 tests (going back to November 1999) Norton has passed an impressive 45 of them. The VB 100% award is given to antivirus software that detects all viruses “in the wild.”
West Coast Labs’ Checkmark Anti-Virus Desktop Certification. WCL specializes in functionality testing, performance validation and Checkmark Certification of security products.

4) Help & Support: (4 of 5)

Symantec’s support has gotten better over the last few years. Previously the only good support was through their paid support systems. Now Symantec offers many
good free support options. The Norton support website is comprehensive and easy to use. The in-program Help Files are informative and also offer step-by-step Tutorials for major issues. The “One Click Support” within Norton 2010 automatically scans your Norton software for known issues and offers suggestions. If this doesn’t help you can use their free Chat, Email or Phone support – however, free phone support is only offered for limited program issues (virus removal and other PC problems require paid support). We tested their Email support and received a thorough response 9 hours later. Overall, despite negative opinions of Nortons support in the past, it has transformed itself into a top-tier support system.

CONCLUSION:

Norton Antivirus 2010 continues on its revitalization path that began last year towards becoming a better performing Antivirus program. Norton 2010 does have a larger installation size and requires slightly more memory than last year’s version, but Norton Antivirus 2010 is still the top of its class in terms of performance. It is now apparent that Symantec is taking the performance of its Antivirus software seriously now as shown by 2 consecutive top-rated versions.

Norton 2010 has several new weapons in its virus-scanning arsenal (Norton Insight Network and SONAR 2) which should better protect against rogue downloads and malicious files. Norton has moved over the last few years to a multi-layered approach to computer security, and its new features this year add yet another layer to your computer’s protection.

Our only real concern with Norton this year is that it did not perform as well in Malware testing as it has in previous years. Norton Antivirus passed all the major tests this year, but it received only 2 out of 3 stars in AV-Comparatives’ May testing (it did receive 3 stars in the August test). Still, despite this result,
Norton is overall the best Antivirus program that we tested.

Norton Antivirus 2010 is a good choice for computer novices and intermediates – for more advanced users we would recommend Norton Internet Security 2010
due to its added Firewall, Anti-Spam, Anti-Phishing, and other capabilities not included in Norton Antivirus – plus it can be installed on 3 computers unlike Norton Antivirus (1 computer).

Overall Rating: Excellent! (4.5 of 5)

CA Antivirus 2010 Review

CA Anti-Virus 2009

CA Antivirus 2010 is a solid virus scanner that works well to find and eliminate viruses. Unfortunately, this is all it can do. There are no extra features included with CA Antivirus beyond the bare minimums. In many cases, this could be considered an asset due to speed increases associated with many minimalist programs. CA doesn’t take advantage of this in the 2009 version which still slows your computer down all around.
Ease of Use:
Excellent

CA Antivirus is extremely easy to use. Full system scans are only 2 clicks from the main program screen. If you need to change any advanced options, of which there are very few, you will have to go a little bit deeper within the program to find them.

Effectiveness:
Excellent

CA Antivirus has been known for having solid products throughout their history. They didn’t fail to impress this time around. The engine that is used for CA Antivirus is WCL, ICSA and VB100% certified and is well equipped to find and clean any viruses that it finds on your computer.

Updates:
Excellent

Updates are checked for once a day if set to update automatically. If you have a need to get faster updates, there is an option to change the frequency of the automatic updates. You also have the ability to update manually if you have the need to do so.

Feature Set:
Excellent

CA Antivirus includes no extended features that we could find in our testing of the product. Standard antivirus features such as a virus scanner, scan scheduling utility and quarantine are present, but comprise the full extent of features included with CA Antivirus.

Ease of Installation:
Excellent

Installing CA Antivirus was fast and easy. There was a glitch on the registration screen that wouldn’t allow us to register the product correctly. This issue did not hold us back as we could just cancel the registration.

Summary:

CA Antivirus 2010 is a good product for specific antivirus needs. It includes a good antivirus engine and stops there. Extended features are saved for other products within the CA family. If you have a specific need for JUST an antivirus program, CA Antivirus is a good option.

Symantec Norton Antivirus 2010 Review

Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 2010

By: Charles P. Jefferies

It’s still 2009, but Norton couldn’t wait for the New Year to release Norton Antivirus 2010. Is this really a security application ahead of its time, or is Norton 2010 just an average A/V suite released a few months too soon? Read our full review for the final verdict.

Product Overview

Norton AntiVirus 2010 (NAV10) is a new security software product for home and home office use. It is advertised to protect from viruses, spyware, bots, and other threats. NAV10 emphasizes proactive security for the end user without compromising system performance; it is claimed to use just over 10MB of memory. Several new technologies for 2010 are included in NAV10. Sonar 2 technology analyzes files and determines whether they should be trusted or not, and Download Insight Protection helps determine the safety of downloads. Insight technology provides users with relevant information on files in their systems, and for more technical users, information about processes in Windows. These technologies are based on a new concept called “reputation based” security that checks files against a Norton database filled with data collected from Norton’s user community.

Installation and Activation

NAV10 demonstrates its advertised ease of use when installed. NAV10 is a 75MB download; after starting the installer it takes only one minute and one click to finish. No restart is required either.

After install, the user is prompted to enter their license key and activate their Norton account. This completes installation and activation. NAV10 has the most hassle-free install of any antivirus software product I have tested to date.

PROGRAM INTERFACE

NAV10′s interface is similar to last year’s version (which is a good thing) and improved — the color scheme is easier on the eyes and information is more organized. The layout is clean and the terminology is friendly enough that novice users can understand. Clicking on the “I” next to each component provides more information.

The two bars on the left represent Norton monitoring performance — system processor usage is given on the left, and NAV10′s cut is on the right. This is basically Norton saying “I’m not taking up your system resources!” Clicking on the performance link opens up the Performance side of NAV10:

Most users will not look at or care about this, but for the more technically inclined, it can be informative.

Overall security status is given in the upper left corner. The Computer section of the interface keeps tabs on local items and allows users to scan and run updates. NAV10 updates itself automatically every hour, though I updated once manually to see it in action:

The Computer section also allows users to see how they have contributed to Norton’s worldwide security database by clicking on Insight Protection Details. Norton uses this database to help identify threats. This is very proactive because as soon as one user detects a virus, everyone knows about it and is thus protected.

The Network section of the interface shows how the computer is protected from Internet threats. Clicking on Vulnerability Protection shows a list of programs Norton has protected from threats, and the Network Security Map shows what the name implies — a map of a user’s home network, a wireless security analysis, and information on all connected devices.

IN USE AND EFFECTIVENESS

NAV10 did not interfere with gaming, Internet surfing, or office tasks. It operated silently in the background; I only knew it was running because of the yellow circle icon in the system tray.

To test the effectiveness of NAV10, I used several virus files from Eicar.org, an IT security website. The four files provided for download, which have different extensions including .com, .zip, and .txt, contain viruses.

NAV10 successfully identified all test virus files as threats, though it did not delete them from the download location. I was surprised at this; even though the files were neutralized and could not do any harm the software should have removed them.

CONCLUSION

Norton Antivirus continues to be an excellent and well-rounded security solution for end users. We think Norton is headed in the right direction by using data submitted by its user community to analyze threats. We liked the software’s proactive security stance, minimal performance impact, and friendly interface. We highly recommend Norton Antivirus 2010 to home users looking for an effective but affordable security solution.

PROS:

  • Friendly interface
  • Low performance impact
  • Very proactive

CONS:

  • No auto-delete of malware
  • Full scans not quick
  • Not free

Today Antivirus Team.
